Effective Ways to Encourage Customer Reviews

Building a strong online reputation starts with consistently asking for reviews—and there are many ethical and effective ways to do it. The goal is to make the process easy, timely, and appealing for your customers.

1. Ask Directly at the Right Moment

The most common and often most effective method is simply asking in person. This can be during a conversation after a successful service or purchase, while the customer’s positive experience is still fresh in their mind. A personal request from someone they’ve interacted with goes a long way.

2. Incorporate Review Requests in Everyday Communication

You can seamlessly encourage reviews through your existing touchpoints. Some examples include:

  • Adding a review link or QR code in email signaturesinvoice footers, or thank-you emails
  • Including review request cards or inserts in mailed correspondence, such as receipts or follow-up letters
  • Automating a polite follow-up message a few days after service asking for feedback with a direct link to your Google review page

3. Use Signage and Visual Prompts

A simple, effective strategy is to display a sign at your front desk or checkout area that reads something like:

“We’d love your feedback! Scan this QR code to leave us a Google review.”
You can even add your star rating and number of reviews to reinforce your credibility.

4. Offer Ethical Incentives (With Caution)

You can encourage participation by offering an incentive—but be careful to avoid violating review platform guidelines. Rather than asking for only 5-star reviews, consider wording it like this:

“Leave us a review and be entered to win a $50 Starbucks gift card!”

Make it clear that any honest review qualifies, not just five-star reviews. This keeps you within Google’s and Yelp’s terms of service while still motivating customers to take action.

Here are additional ways to solicit reviews

1. SMS Review Requests

If you already collect customer phone numbers, consider sending a brief follow-up text message with a thank-you note and a direct link to your review page. SMS has a high open rate and feels more personal and immediate than email.

2. Review Generation Tools

Platforms like NiceJobBirdEyePodium, or Grade.us specialize in review collections. These tools automate the process by sending reminders and routing satisfied customers to platforms like Google, Facebook, or Yelp.

3. QR Codes on Physical Materials

Besides desk signage, place QR codes on:

  • Product packaging
  • Business cards
  • Loyalty cards
  • Vehicle decals (for mobile services)

This makes it easy for customers to leave a review at their convenience.

4. Social Media Campaigns

Run a campaign on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn encouraging followers to leave a review. Highlight a few great reviews in your posts to show appreciation, and invite others to share their experiences.

5. Post-Service Surveys

Offer a short satisfaction survey via email or text after service. At the end, include a link that says:

“Would you like to share your experience on Google? It only takes a minute!”

This filters out unhappy customers and nudges happy ones toward leaving public feedback.

6. Loyalty and Referral Programs

When asking for reviews, tie it into your loyalty or referral program:

“As a thank-you for being a loyal customer, leave us a review and get 10% off your next visit!”
Just be careful not to require a positive rating to receive the incentive—that can violate review platform rules.

7. Video Reviews

If you have satisfied, outgoing clients, ask them for a short testimonial video. Post it on your website and social channels, and use it to inspire others to write their own.

8. Highlighting Your Reviews

When you highlight good reviews on your website, emails, or print materials, you subtly reinforce their value and encourage more people to leave on their own.
